Egg donation

No alternatives in Germany

Early onset menopause - for example due to inflammation, ovarian endometriosis or even genetically caused - if the ovaries are no longer able to make egg cells or there is a drastically restricted egg cell quantity and/or quality.

Here, often the only option is egg donation. Similar to insemination with donor sperm, ethical and legal concerns determine what occurs here: While insemination using donated sperm (heterologous insemination) is possible in Germany, egg donation is not allowed (Embryo Protection Act).

Egg donation involves retrieving eggs using follicle puncture after hormonal stimulation as in IVF therapy and usually fertilising them via microinsemination (ICSI). The transmission is then done during a hormonally regulated cycle with the recipient of the embryo.
